Coach John, We will Miss You

We are deeply saddened to learn and report that Coach John Sloan died yesterday during an open water competition in Crystal Lake. John has worked with LFSC as a volunteer coach since October 2009. In that time he helped every level of the program, starting with the Mighty Ducks and most recently helping Coach Mo with the Sr squads.

Coach John was passionate about swimming and competed in masters meets worldwide. His passion led him to see coaching as his next great swimming challenge. That led to his cold call last fall, asking if LFSC coaches would mentor him and give him an opportunity to pass his passion for swimming to the team. All of us will miss him and the love of swimming he brought to the deck.

Lake Forest College Building Access and Security

The college has asked that we help maintain better security by limiting and monitoring building access during times when the Sports Center is not generally open. Accordingly we will be opening the building for these practices 15 minutes prior to scheduled start and locking the doors at the start time. This will affect all practices scheduled to start prior to 7:00am and all dryland or practice sessions on Saturdays.

Please check the practice schedule carefully and be on time for practice. If you are late you will have to wait to enter until the building is next open. Here is the building access schedule for morning practices prior to 7:00am:

  • 5:45am   Open    6:00am   Lock
  • 6:30am   Open    6:45am   Lock
  • 7:00am   Open

As the Sports Center is not open for use by any group (including students) on Saturdays once the building is locked it will not be re-opened.

Practice is on at the Lake Bluff pool

Yes, Ducks swim in the rain! A little rain won't hurt Tough Ducks, its just a little rough for the coaches.

Unless we have lightning or thunder we will have practice in the rain. If the Mini Ducks class is cancelled we will schedule a make-up class.

See you at the pool!!!

New Digs!

The LFSC office is moving back to Lake Forest College this week. Between practice sessions the coaches have been packing, moving and un-packing lots of boxes. We are expecting to be completely moved in by the weekend.

The new phone number is 847-735-5372 and is in service now. We are trying to keep up with all of our email and phone calls during the move but may take a little extra time getting back to you.

Our new office space is part of a new lease agreement with the college, funded in part through the efforts of out Lap-A-Thon. This new agreement will also include use of the new LFC Dixon Weightroom. We are approaching our fund raising goal for the agreement and look forward to great member support.

At The Old Swimming Hole

Langston, Mitch and Bryan get ready for practice.

It was a great first day of long course training. Perfect weather, new lane lines and a lot of serious swimming. Be sure to check the schedule regularly for updatestothe schedule. Here are a few other reminders for the season:

Lane Lines -- all swimmers must help put the lane lines in and out at each practice. This means all pools we train at. Be on deck 20 minutes early and plan to stay 15 minutes at the end of each practice session.

Schedule Changes -- we post schedule changes on the Club Calendar as changes occur. Last minute changes (facility schedule changes, weather, for example) are sent through the Calling Post phone tree service. If time permits these are also posted to the website and may be sent through Twitter. Sign up with Calling Post by contacting Coach Laurel; you can follow us on Twitter as swimLFSC.

Weather --  As the weather can vary widely-- it can be raining in Mundelein and bright sunshine in Lake Bluff-- decisions regarding weather are usually made 20-30 minutes prior to scheduled practice time. In general we do not cancel practice, Ducks do swim in the rain! If we cancel or move outdoor practice indoors (LFC or LFA) we post signs at the pool.

Equipment -- do not forget your training equipment! We do not transfer kickboards, pullbuoys or paddles to the Lake Bluff pool, you must have your own equipment. We also do not store lost equipment such as fins and goggles at Lake Bluff either.

LFSC Swimmers Swim With Purpose on May 26 and May 27

The 32nd Annual  LFSC Lap-A-Thon Fundraiser will be held from 5:30-7:30pm at LF Academy on Wednesday, May 26, and at LF College on Thursday, May 27th.   For convenience and to promote full team participation, swimmers may choose either site to complete their laps!

Our club is unique among competitive swimming teams as we receive no support from public funds relying instead on membership fees, our Swim School, revenue from club-hosted swim meets, donations, and the fundraising efforts of our members and friends.

Last year our members met the challenge of raising nearly $10,000 to purchase new lane lines for our outdoor practices. This year we have an even more challenging goal. All funds raised this year will be used to help us continue our long term (40 plus year) partnership with Lake Forest College.

The college is offering us the opportunity to secure long-term access to the new weightroom and office space in the recently completed state-of-the-art Lake Forest College Sports and Recreation Center. This means that LFSC will be the only non-LFC group with permanent office space at the Sports Center.

As a very special incentive we are teaming up with the college to meet the Wes Dixon Challenge, a $1,000,000 matching funds effort. That means that every dollar rasied in our 2010 Lap-A-Thon has double value to LFSC in meeting our fundraising goal.

2010 has been a financially challenging year for all youth sports and non-profit groups and we are no exception. Please help us with your support. With 100% participation from our members we are confident we can meet this goal. Thank you in advance for providing this generation of swimmers and those of the future with an opportunity to pursue their swimming dreams at the Lake Forest Swim Club.
